Universal Strangeness

This is a bit like one of my Physics lecturers who said he thought the Universe was like a Mandelbrot set, which is governed by a surprisingly simple equation. However, he didn't think that anyone would ever be able to work out what this equation was merely from studying Mandelbrot sets themselves, although they were likely to produce a whole collection of rules describing bits of the set.
